IPD was registered in 2013, and its foundation stone was formally laid by Prof. Dr. Johan Galtung, the Father of Global Peace Studies, at the institute’s launch event: the First International Conference on the History of Nonviolent Resistance in Pakistan, held in Islamabad. The conference brought together scholars, historians, and peace practitioners to explore Pakistan’s legacy of peaceful struggle, examining the historical significance, key movements, and enduring lessons of nonviolent resistance as a means to promote justice, peace, and social transformation. The institute’s early Advisory Board reflected this grounding in the global peace studies tradition, including Prof. Dr. Dietrich Fischer, a founding member of the Galtung Institut for Peace Theory and Practice.
