China’s Belt and Road Soft Power Advances in the Balkans as Serbia’s Danube Corridor Expands

A new 28-kilometre stretch of the Chinese-built Danube Corridor expressway opened to traffic in Serbia this week, part of a broader Belt and Road portfolio – spanning Belgrade’s metro system, the EXPO 2027 complex and the Budapest–Belgrade railway – that has made China the largest single source of foreign direct investment in Serbia in recent years.
